August 2012—January 2015
New York City
A two-person sketch show covering every detail of New York City in 60 minutes: the history, culture, architecture, and food.
In 2012, I wrote a show all about New York City with fellow comedian, Margaret Copeland. The goal was to write a show that would cover every detail of New York City in 60 minutes, the history, the cultures, the architecture, and the food.
We opened October 17, 2012 at Sophia’s Downstairs Theater on 45th Street in Midtown Manhattan, below the Hotel Edison. Our first review in Backstage Magazine was a D+, but…the show went on to run 315 performances — often sold out — between 2012 and 2015. It is a show that I will always think back fondly on. It was a really great lesson to get such a bad review on the first thing I ever wrote because it was the best I could do at the time, it didn’t impact ticket sales, and many, many people loved the show and came back multiple times.
Here’s the press release from 2012:
This two-person sketch show delivers a laugh-filled tour around the greatest city in the world with actors, comedians and licensed tour guides Margaret Copeland and Kevin James Doyle as they play over 70 characters in 60 minutes.
Under the direction of OBIE Award winner Robert Ross Parker, this SNL-style comedy features a hilarious look at New York City’s 400-year history. Immigrants, construction workers, muggers, Wall Street bankers, panhandlers, MTA workers, and Mayor Bloomberg all get a solid lampooning… and the audience is served a full Italian dinner with each performance, whether they were born on the Upper West Side or just took their first terrifying cab ride.
